Twitter, the social media giant owned by Elon Musk, announced that it will allow adult content on its platform with some restrictions.
In an update to its terms of service, Twitter stated: “You may share consensually produced and distributed adult nudity or sexual behavior […] users should be able to create, distribute, and consume material related to sexual themes as long as it is consensually produced and distributed.”
Adult AI-generated content, photographic or animated cartoons, hentai or anime, will also be allowed on the platform.
“We balance this freedom by restricting exposure to Adult Content for children or adult users who choose not to see it. We also prohibit content promoting exploitation, nonconsent, objectification, sexualization or harm to minors, and obscene behaviors. We also do not allow sharing Adult Content in highly visible places such as profile photos or banners.”
Users who share adult content are still required to “mark media” they post “as containing material that may be sensitive.” The setting can be found under their “privacy and safety” account dashboard.
Twitter has yet to allow adult content creators to generate income from ad revenue displayed under their posts. But in 2023, Musk signaled it was only a matter of time before Twitter could authenticate NSFW content for purchase under a subscription scheme allowing users to watch their favorite creators for a monthly fee.
As of October 2022, 13% of all posts on Twitter were adult-related. Meta, YouTube, and TikTok have all banned adult content from being posted or viewed on their respective platforms.
